However, I also think that the basic troubleshooting step of "reinstall the game" would also have wiped the Proton prefix, and so, his saves. You posit that this usage of control isn't necessarily a problem with overall user experience streamlining (of being a PC instead of a console), but rather a possible result of taking the options that a PC gives you that a console gates off, and exercising those options. It's good that you can do more and have full control of your device, but that amount of control can land you in a disadvantageous state that would be impossible with normal consoles. I do agree with your main point, that the Deck allows you more control than a normal console, which can be both good and bad.
